KANO PUBLIC HOSPITALS AND EMERGENCY CASES.

KANO PUBLIC HOSPITALS AND EMERGENCY CASES.

Kano is the most populated state in northern Nigeria with more than 15million people. There are 8 Local government within Kano Metropolis i.e Nassarawa, Dala Municipal, Tarauni, Fagge, kumbotso, Gwale and ungogo which constitutes almost two third (2/3) of the total population in the state.
However, the population in the state is growing rapidly which is always associated with some factors like increase in social pressure, rate of accidents, pollution, spread of diseases and other ailments. Therefore, it is necessary for the governments to provide all the essential social amenities basically for simplifying the life of the people particularly health care delivery services to cater for the teaming population of the state.
As pointed out earlier, being one of most populated state in Nigeria (2006 Census), the provision of essential health institutions and manpower in the state is inevitable especially in the area of accident, emergency and relief management substantially because of the rate at which these phenomena occurred on daily basis is highly noticeable, everyday people/ rescue operation team are striving to take the victims of accident and or emergency to the hospital for treatment, but the number of public hospitals that treat emergency cases in the state are not adequate to respond to the rate of casualties happening in the State. With population of more than 15 million people but there are only 5 public hospitals  that are assigned to provide emergency treatment within the metropolis, and these are Murtala Muhammed Specialists Hospital (Municipal), Muhammed Abdullahi Wase Specialists Hospital and Sir Muhammadu Sunusi (I) Hospital (Nassarawa), Infectious Diseases Hospital(IDH) and Sheikh Muhammad Jidda Hospital(all in Fagge) among others, and it is believed that these hospital could not respond adequately to the corresponding rate of accident and emergency in Kano metropolis.
Emergency treatment is concerned with the immediate care of patients involves in serious or  life threatening injury or illness as a result of either accidents or sudden attack of any disease. The personnel working in the unit are expected to be professional in almost all types of diseases,  that is to say they can deal and treat  wide range of ailments and to provide the patients or victims of accident with urgent life saving care as first aid before transferring them to the appropriate unit within or outside the hospital for additional care. But to be honest what is happening in Kano Public Hospitals outrages the law that back up the provisions and duties of emergency unit in the hospital. This is because emergency departments are always expected to be fully equipped with all the necessary facilities and personnel such as enough drugs, well trained Doctors and Nurses, who have the capacity to diagnose and treat any and immediate casualties  and who are  suppose to be available on call or duty for 24 hours 7 days committed to rescue operation unconditionally, but to be honest accident and emergency unit in all the above mentioned public hospitals in kano are operating below expectation. It happened to me recently, I took  one my aunty who had sudden collapsed as a result of high blood pressure to Nassarawa hospital around 9pm where I found about 20 patients with different ailments who are in desperate and in dare need of immediate attention, some sitting on the benches, others on bare floor and some receiving drift on hospital wheel chairs and ordinary benches, but with all these the patients were attended to by 2 Doctor for both accident and emergency cases, and the most ridiculous thing is when I found out that bed space is not up to 10 and is already filled, because of this they refered us to Murtala Muhammed specialists hospital where the level of negligence is uncondonable, this is because at first we are adviced to give some money as a bribe before we are allowed to have access to the A&E premises with car because the patient I carried was in a state if comma which need to be taken closer to the building, secondly we met more than 30 patients also attended by single Doctor too. And we also got the same response 'NO BEDSPACE' but there was stretcher and we need to do something under the ground for them to secure it. We now proceeded to Sheikh Muhammadu Jidda Hospital but the same story, and finally we took her to AKTH around 2am  where she was attended and treated accordingly.
This seems to be highly incredible, incredulous and inconceivable in a state like Kano and is ashamed for the government of Kano State who for long over preaches justice, equity and fairness especially in health sector which I later realised as total fabricated lies, deception and propaganda, certainly I must confess that citizens in the state particularly the masses who always depend on public hospitals are been disgraced for long and are considered unimportant and fools in public hospitals.
What I experienced was a reality and it is the fact that requires no investigation but to clear your doubt you can visit one or two of the public hospital in the state especially during night hours and see what is exactly happening with your eyes, you must sympathize and have serious compassion to the patients, because some are forced to die as a result of poverty, hostility and careless, indeed you may even shade tears in respond to the condition of poor patients in public hospitals particularly in Accident and Emergency Units and labour room.
My questions here are why the public hospitals, clinics and other health institutions are neglected and sometimes abandoned just like that? Is it because governments officials are not using public hospitals or because of the fact that they are visiting oversea for their medical attention and check up? And why many Doctors are abandoning their duties in public hospital and concentrate much in private Hospital? Why poor patients are receiving higher hostilities and aggressiveness in public hospitals? And my last question is why government is lying through the media on the issue of health care delivery?
I rest my case by blaming the authorities concerned including the state government for this  negligence because of  what the bureaucratic concept of ANONYMITY entails that government as powerfull body must be liable for any credit or blame happened in the society. So for these reason kano state government need to wake up and start making some active adjustment capable of transforming the state of our public hospitals particularly in emergency units because to me I think it is the most important unit in any hospital.
Finally more emergency treatment centres should be established by both government and our communities across the state in order to meet up the demand attached to health care in Kano state. I am sure if government harmonize our health sectors per excellent everything will be in order and all the blunders observed in public hospitals must be corrected.

DEMOCRACY DAY: THE ASSESSMENT OF 18 YEARS REIGN.

DEMOCRACY DAY: THE ASSESSMENT OF 18 YEARS REIGN
BY:
MUDASSIR ALIYU YUNUSA

mudassiray@gmail.com

Democracy is a political system of government where people are rule base on any form of leadership style they choose to establish through popular support, suffrage or referendum, collaboration, unity in direction as well as public interests. in modern democracy documented rules guiding the conduct of the society are drafted to serve as a Constitution,  likewise the general public must have confidence, trust,  satisfaction and also  checkmates the activities of government through public opinion either in form of support or constructive opposition, likewise government should be fully representative and responsible particularly in the provision of welfare, security, law and order to the entire citizens without any  discrimination and inequality.
Democracy as the most popular system of governance with global recognition particularly from the US and its allies including the United Nation (UN),  comprises so many features such as the Fundamental Human Rights i.e freedom of speech and expression, the press freedom, right to life and acquire economic resources, the rule of law, the periodic elections and provision of welfare and security as the dividends of democracy.
However the current democratic era is the most successful  uninterrupted reign of civilian administration compared to the previous time, the political scene marked 18 years without Military intervention as against previous reign of civilian administration of first, second and attempted third republics that were overthrown in less than 6 years of their inceptions. However, It is interesting  to note that only within this period (1999 - 2017) Nigerian democracy ever witnessed remarkable transition that allowed the successful handing over power from elected civilian to another elected civilian in 2007( Obasanjo to Yar'adua)  and also from one political party to another (PDP to APC) in 2015, with this we can say there is great improvement with regard to the sustainability and consolidation of democracy in the country.
Today (29th May 2017), elected politician and political office holders in Nigeria are celebrating the return of civilian rule. It is exactly 18 years with the shipment of political power from long reign of military rule to democratically elected government on 29th May, 1999 when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was elected as the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria, subsequently in 2007 Mallam Umaru Musa 'Yar'adua (of blessed memory) was elected to be the First civilian President to receive the mantle of leadership from another civilian alike. In 2010 the demise of 'Yar'adua on the throne of leadership gave  Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who was Vice President the constitutional right to became the first not contested and not elected civilian President of Nigeria, he later contested and won 2011 election and clinch the apex seat in the country for 4 years. More importantly however, the transitional period of 2015 set a remarkable record in the history of Nigerian democracy as it was the first time when opposition party defeated the ruling party and dislodged the incumbent President in the most acceptable and credible election conducted in March 2015 which saw General Muhammadu Buhari as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The scenario of 18 years democracy is full of  political and social atrocities with little improvements per say in terms of both social and economic development, and on the other way round it could be considered unsuccessful when it comes to the realization of common goals, aspirations and yearnings of  Nigerians. The reason why I said this is because our people are really suffering from unnecessary hardship created by avoidable poverty, insecurity and hunger in a country that is blessed with abundance treasures and unquantifiable wealth, yet the standard of living is always deteriorating right from the inception of this democracy in 1999. Quite rightly there are certain improvements registered within these 18 years but the basic needs of the citizens and the real dividend of democracy are still under problem.
The dividends of democracy are nothing but attainment of satisfaction with regards to the provision of societal basic welfare, fair political participation, fundamental human right, free, fair and credible elections, accountability and integrity of ruling class as well as sustaining the needs and yearnings of the citizens attached to government such as good roads, hospitals, sound education, constant electricity supply and potable drinking water, enhanced security of lives and properties etc. Still in Nigeria the above are yet to be ascertained  in almost 2 decades of democracy  which in essence compounded the serious hardship the citizens are facing now.
This is no doubt a shame for a country like Nigeria endowed with vast nature of wealth endowments in relation to both human and material resources that should be properly and honestly harnessed for the benefit of its citizen.
Therefore, for proper assessment of 18 years democracy in Nigeria one has to consider the socio-economic and political  direction of the polity more importantly the growth and sustainable development in different spheres of human interactions, eventhough each regime came up with it's plan and agenda but their collective achievements are not something worthy of showing and indeed it is really discouraging. For instance, Obasanjo achieved a lot in enhancing communication system and he equally worked to  maintain the political division of the country, but unable to boost energy and industrial sector of the country. Yar'adua achieved in stabilizing the economic trend by equalizing the pump price of PMS, AGO and DPK for the benefit of the general public, he also brought amnesty programs for the peace to reign in Niger Delta but his ailment became a great challenge to his administration. Jonathan also maintained economic growth rate and relative welfare of the citizens despite facing serious insecurity and insurgency of Boko haram and other ethnic and tribal rivalries. Buhari administration so far achieved excellently in fighting against insurgency and the evil of corruption but the economy is completely in great disorder and ruin. The high rate of inflation, unemployment, the high exchange rate volatility, high pump price of Petrol and low income distribution are the negative factors that presently hold the country to ransom. In fact people especially the masses who are in the majority are really suffering.
In conclusion, to be frank the development of Nigeria under current democratic epoch with 4 civilian heads is really below expectation considering the level of standard of living, the welfare, the life expectancy indices of Nigerian citizens as well as the level of infrastructures available to compliment and provide easy and low cost of living to the teaming population. Therefore,  it is left for the general public to assess and evaluate the performance as well as the quality of the current democracy and make reasonable judgement whether to celebrate 18th anniversary today tagged ‘The Democracy Day' or not.

THE SUPERB SCORE OF KANO STATE GOVERNMENT FROM 2011 TO DATE.

THE SUPERB SCORE OF KANO STATE GOVERNMENT FROM 2011 TO DATE.

BY:
MUDASSIR ALIYU YUNUSA
NTA ZARIA

Before making any pronouncement on the above subject matter let me make it categorically clear that I am not a politician and neither aligned to any political party, but a common citizen who support any sort of development of my community, state and nation in general, at the same time I also denounce injustice and irresponsiveness entirely, tyranny and hostility are against my strong conviction. Therefore, in respect to the concept of public opinion provided by democratic system of governance which gives freedom of expression in form of support or opposition, this article will focus on the score line of Kano State Government from 2011 to date.
Kano is the most populous state in Africa, it is the centre of commerce and a beacon of hope especially for down trodden masses, the state came into being with 11 others making the first 12 states created in 1967. Kano is highly hospitable city where people are coming from within and outside the country for their business transactions. As the most populous state of the federation, Kano underwent series of political and socio-economic transformation which gave her an age over others.
From inception to date, the state is governed by 10 military administrators and 5 civilian Governors, but 1 person among the civilian endure the bitterness of politics after vacating the Africa House for 8 years and regain his abandon seat which is the most apex and prominent office in the state. His renaissance into the water of Kano politics as a governor for the 2nd term was miracle and monumental.
On 29th May, 2011 there was new government with new strategy of leade4rship with great enthusiasm and high incumbency strength the state government went ahead and embarked on vigorous and dynamic transformations aimed at restructuring the vision of the state in different spheres of human endeavor. Priority measures were put in place with intense zeal and passionate efforts in transforming the entire state to attain greatness if not an eminence stage of development. No doubt Kano has now become the symbol of emulation and also a place of honor, prestige, admiration and high regard from within and outside the state and the country at large.
Among great stride taken by the new leadership between 2011 to date are numerous but to mention some few are:
Construction in progress of 3 ultra modern cities of Kwankwasiyya and Amana cities in the southern part while Bandirawo city in the northern part of state capital; construction of 3 mega fly over bridges at Kofar Nassarawa – State Road, Ibrahim Taiwo Road and Fagge – Bata on top of famous Murtala Muhammed Way, Construction of underground tunnel Road at Kofar Kabuga and Gadon Kaya.
Rehabilitation Kofar Naisa- Galadanchi Road, Gwale Gudindi to Kwanar Diso, Zungeru Road, Dan Agundi Road, Lugard Road, Magajin Rumfa Road, Airforce Base Road, Kano – Madobi Road with Bridge at ‘Yan Dango, Zaria Road, Hadejia Road, Farm Centre Roads.
Dualization of Sabuwar Kofa Road, Gwarzo Road, Sheikh Jafar Adam Road, Court Road, AKTH Road as well as provision of Street lights, Road traffic regulations (traffic lights and KAROTA) and some other things that helps in beautifying the city.
In the area of Education Kano State Government in 3 years time was able to established North-West university, establishment of 18 educational Institutions to promote human capital and capacity building in various field and the schools were located in different local government areas; establishment of Governor’s College Kano, School for Arabic and Islamic Studies Madobi. The most interesting in this regard is the tremendous effort of sponsoring more than 3500 undergraduate and postgraduate students  in different discipline (medicine and pharmacy, engineering, piloting and other art and social science courses) to abroad in order to improve the level of education, skills acquisition and manpower development in the state. My overview in education will never be complete pending to mention out the provision of free primary, secondary, tertiary and university education to all bonafide indigenes in Kano State.
In health sector, Kano state government does not relent in the prevision of hospital equipments and authentic drugs especially for women and children; construction of Madobi General Hospital together with school of nursing.
Economically, despite high rate of tax evasion, the State Government explore almost all possible ways of generating internal revenue which helps immensely towards successful accomplishment of its commitments.

It is believed that any regime of leadership must be associated with some failures and other shortcomings in one way or the other but to be candid and sincere the unprecedented achievements of current administration supersede its failure. Therefore considering the presents of dividends of democracy in Kano the general public is really indebted to their government, let us set aside and forget all sentiments, political differences and express our profound gratitude and commendation to our dear government. For me as a bonafide indigene of Kano state I must write this piece to show my appreciations and to pray for this gesture to perpetuate with the hope of sustaining the trend for our future generations. Once again I salute the courage and determination of the great leader of regime Engineer (Dr) Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso(MNSE), his team of productive personalities as well as members of general public who in one way or the other assists in making our state a noble among its contemporaries (other 35 states of the federation)
Finally, for the good people of Kano, the onerous task to sustain these legacies rest squarely on our shoulders. Long life Kano State, Long life Federal Republic of Nigeria.
